Why use sunscreen on your face?
Prevention of premature aging, pigmentation, and skin conditions
Unprotected skin develops fine lines, wrinkles, and an uneven skin tone faster and is more exposed to skin conditions. Photoaging (premature aging) accelerates the aging process – and although we celebrate all ages and the expressions they bring, for many, it makes sense to prevent premature skin aging. Sunscreen simply acts as a shield against free radicals and UV damage.
SPF explained briefly, benefits of broad-spectrum protection
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. Broad-spectrum sunscreen also protects against UVA rays, which contribute to photoaging.
How to choose the right facial sunscreen
Rudolph Care sunscreens are developed to suit a wide range of skin types, from dry to sensitive, combination skin, and pigmentation concerns. They are all formulated with nourishing ingredients that actively work with the skin to make it soft, supple, and give a natural glow.
Sunscreen for dry skin
Dry skin needs extra moisture and nourishment – all of which Rudolph Care’s facial sunscreens provide. If you prefer a nourishing day cream with SPF, try the Sun Face Cream SPF 15, 30, or 50. Combine it with a protective base from the nourishing Sun Face Serum SPF 30. Our Sun Face Oil SPF 25 protects and boosts the skin with hydration and natural nutrients.
Sunscreen for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin requires gentle protection and can be tricky to manage. As a rule, all our sunscreens – Sun Face Cream, Sun Face Serum, and Sun Face Oil – are suitable for sensitive skin, as they are Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified and formulated with nourishing, hydrating ingredients. However, we always recommend consulting a dermatologist or healthcare professional if you have very sensitive skin or conditions like psoriasis or rosacea. If you opt for fragrance-free sun protection, we recommend our Sun Balm SPF 50 – formulated without water, gentle on the skin, and suitable for both face and body protection. Our Sun Stick SPF 50 is also fragrance-free and easy to apply.
Non-greasy facial sunscreen
If you have combination or oily skin, sunscreen can sometimes be a challenge. Many struggle to find the right sunscreen for their skin – but based on long-term customer experience, oily and combination skin types can, in most cases, use our Sun Face Cream and Sun Face Serum. If you have acne or similar concerns, we always recommend consulting a dermatologist or other professional to determine what works best for your skin.
High SPF sunscreen
High SPF offers extra protection against the sun’s harmful rays. SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. High SPF is especially recommended in strong sun, for delicate skin, or during prolonged outdoor activities. All our sunscreens come with SPF 30 and/or 50 – some with SPF 15.
Sunscreen for pigmentation concerns
Protecting the skin in the sun is crucial if you have pigmentation concerns. Our sunscreens are designed to protect and prevent pigmentation changes – not to treat them. If you want to improve pigmentation, we recommend exploring our Açai All in One series. Açai All in One Moisturizer, Serum, and Eye Cream are all formulated with the revolutionary bioretinol RetinART, derived from the algae Chlorella Vulgaris, which promotes skin cell renewal and can help with hyperpigmentation. RetinART works like traditional retinol – without the negative effects of photosensitivity and the high SPF requirement. In our view, this ingredient is simply genius.
Sunscreen for active lifestyles
If you plan to be active in the sun – running, skiing, surfing, exercising, yoga, etc. – we always recommend using Sun Balm SPF 50 on the face (and the rest of the body). The rich balm nourishes the skin and is both sweat- and water-resistant, and easy to apply without a greasy or sticky feeling.
Understanding SPF, UV rays, and the UV index
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, indicates how much a sunscreen protects against the sun’s UVB rays. SPF 15 blocks around 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks about 97%, and SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. UVB rays cause sunburn and damage skin cells. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to photoaging and pigmentation changes. When we say our facial sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection, it means they protect against both UVA and UVB rays, with a minimum of 1/3 UVA protection and a wavelength of at least 370 nm (also the EU recommendation for optimal UVA and UVB protection).
Sounds technical? Good – because it is! Creating products that nourish the skin while protecting against UVA and UVB rays is not easy. That’s why we are proud to produce skincare that combines SPF with all the benefits you expect from effective, quality products – made locally in Denmark.
But what about the UV index?
The UV index shows how intense the sun’s radiation is. The higher the number, the more important high SPF becomes. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate the clouds, making it important to protect your skin outdoors, especially when the UV index is 3 or higher.
How to apply facial sunscreen correctly
At Rudolph Care, our sun philosophy is that sun protection should feel just as hydrating and nourishing as “regular” skincare products. That’s why all our facial sunscreens are active, nourishing products with broad-spectrum SPF.
1. Apply sunscreen to freshly cleansed skin 30 minutes before sun exposure – preferably in two steps to ensure full coverage. We recommend using Sun Face Serum as a protective base, followed by Sun Face Cream, Sun Balm, or Sun Face Oil.
2. Use a sufficient amount – about one teaspoon for the face and neck for optimal protection.
3. Cover all exposed areas – ears, nose, lips, neck, hairline, and décolleté. Sun Stick SPF 50 and Sun Balm SPF 50 are ideal for this, and convenient on the go.
4. Reapply every 2 hours – and always after sweating, swimming, or towel-drying.
Rudolph Care’s approach to sun filters
At Rudolph Care, we are proud of how we formulate our sunscreens with stable chemical sun filters, all compliant with EU recommendations for optimal UVA and UVB protection and approved by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
Chemical? Yes – the word can sound negative, but it isn’t if chosen carefully. We select chemical sun filters because good chemistry makes sense where it benefits most – and that’s in our sun series. Chemically produced filters are controlled, giving us full knowledge of the content and effect of the final product. Another reason we favor chemical filters is that they don’t leave a greasy, sticky, or white residue on the skin.
